Nine EU Countries Initiate Confrontation with European Convention on Human Rights

Denmark and Italy, supported by seven other EU nations, are challenging the European Court of Human Rights’ interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights. The joint effort signals a potential shift in European policy regarding human rights and deportation of foreign criminals.

The letter, signed by nine European heads of government, asserts the need to discuss whether international conventions adequately address current challenges. The signatories believe the court may have excessively broadened the scope of the convention. This action follows a meeting between Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Italian counterpart, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in Rome, solidifying their foreign policy alliance.

The core issue driving this confrontation is the perceived difficulty in deporting foreign criminals due to the European Court of Human Rights’ rulings. EU countries’ deportation policies are often subject to the court’s jurisdiction.

Julie Schneider, a Europe correspondent, highlights the significance of Denmark’s central role in influencing a major European institution, calling it “a great victory.” Daniel Tidemann, a political journalist, notes the Prime Minister’s determination to advance a strict European immigration policy.

The additional countries endorsing the letter alongside Denmark and Italy are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland. Their collective stance indicates a growing desire to re-evaluate the balance between human rights and national sovereignty within the EU.
