China Seeks to Influence Danish Perception of Taiwan Through Diplomatic Efforts

China is intensifying its diplomatic campaign to sway global opinion on the contentious issue of Taiwan, with a recent briefing held at the Chinese embassy in Denmark. The effort aims to promote China’s interpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and assert its claim over the democratic island.

The Chinese ambassador, Wang Xuefeng, hosted a gathering for Danish journalists, expressing his desire for a greater understanding of China’s position on Taiwan. He emphasized that the Taiwan issue is an internal affair for China to resolve, blaming Taiwanese separatists for the ongoing conflict.

Despite the ambassador’s attempts to present a cooperative and open atmosphere, the dialogue appeared largely one-sided. China’s interpretation of Resolution 2758, which replaced Taiwan with mainland China as the UN representative in 1971, suggests that it grants China the right to Taiwan’s territory, a claim disputed by several Western countries.

During the question and answer session, journalists were not permitted to record the discussion, and the ambassador evaded direct responses to questions about potential consequences for Danish politicians engaging with Taiwanese leaders. He also deflected concerns about a potential invasion of Taiwan, insisting that the term was inappropriate since Taiwan is considered an integral part of China.

China is actively promoting the “one-China principle,” which asserts that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. However, Denmark, like many Western nations, adheres to a “one-China policy,” recognizing the People’s Republic of China without acknowledging Taiwan as part of its territory.

The Chinese Foreign Minister’s earlier statement about respecting Denmark’s sovereignty in Greenland is seen as a subtle critique of the US and a potential attempt to gain future support for China’s claims over Taiwan. China’s diplomatic efforts include highlighting the favorable business relationship between Denmark and China, underscoring the importance of the “one-China principle” as a foundation for collaboration.
