Denmark aims to make environmental issues a top priority during its upcoming EU presidency, starting July 1. Mona Juul, chairman of the Conservative party, is advocating for a stronger focus on nature and has discussed accelerating environmental policy with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Juul emphasized the need for collaborative environmental efforts at the European level and pledged to hold both von der Leyen and the Danish government accountable. She stressed that Denmark should actively promote environmental action during its presidency rather than remaining passive.
Specifically, Juul is calling for stricter punishments for environmental crimes, moving beyond simple fines. She argues that these crimes endanger drinking water, soil quality, and the well-being of future generations.
Additionally, Juul is advocating for a national ban on PFAS, a chemical substance found in various everyday products. She views environmental protection as a “generational responsibility,” ensuring that future generations can enjoy nature as previous ones have.
During her speech at Folkemødet (The People’s Meeting) on Bornholm, Juul used the children’s book “Palle Alone in the World” to symbolize the importance of protecting nature so that future generations are not left alone. She highlighted the interconnectedness of people and the environment.
The final day of Folkemødet will feature speeches from Morten Messerschmidt (Danish People’s Party), Martin Lidegaard (Radical Left), and Franciska Rosenkilde (The Alternative).
