Denmark must bolster its security strategy by significantly expanding conscription to deter potential threats in an increasingly volatile global landscape. The current geopolitical climate, marked by a more isolationist United States and an assertive Russia, demands a reevaluation of Denmark’s defense capabilities.
The threat of direct hostilities from Russia against European countries is frighteningly real, especially given the ongoing war in Ukraine. If Ukraine were to fall, the front line would move closer to Denmark, highlighting the urgent need for a stronger defense posture.
Denmark’s current military capabilities are insufficient for effective territorial defense. The nation lacks the capacity to protect itself against Russian air attacks, underscoring the vulnerability and the need for immediate action. A viable security strategy requires strength, making Denmark an attractive partner for allies. This necessitates modern weapons systems and, crucially, a substantial number of soldiers.
Expanding conscription is a costly endeavor, but the potential consequences of inaction are far greater. The devastation in Ukraine, estimated at over DKK 1,000 billion, serves as a stark reminder of the costs of war. Failure to deter an enemy could result in catastrophic damage to critical infrastructure, energy supplies, industries, and residential areas, leading to immense destruction, displacement, and fear.
General conscription ensures that everyone contributes to the nation’s defense. Collective action is essential, as individual efforts alone are insufficient. Similar to how citizens participate in democracy through voting, despite the minimal impact of a single vote, defending Denmark requires the collective effort of all citizens.
While the idea of expanded conscription may be inconvenient, it is a necessary step to safeguard Denmark’s security in a dangerous world. The combined strength of its citizens is the only way to protect the nation.
