Denmark is accelerating the development of its heavy brigade, allocating DKK 2.7 billion to expedite the acquisition of essential equipment and ammunition. This initiative aims to bolster national defense and collective deterrence in response to the evolving security landscape in Europe.
The advancement of the brigade’s construction, originally slated for completion at a later date, is being expedited by several years. The allocated funds will be directed towards acquiring ammunition for infantry fighting vehicles and tanks, among other critical resources.
Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the urgency of strengthening the Armed Forces’ combat capabilities. He stated that the accelerated development of the heavy brigade is crucial for enhancing both national defense and collective deterrence efforts.
A brigade, the largest military unit in the Danish Armed Forces, comprises soldiers, tanks, weapons, and vehicles, capable of independent deployment for combat operations within weeks. Meeting NATO’s longstanding requirement for such a unit has been a priority for Denmark.
The advancement of acquisitions varies, with some capabilities being expedited by approximately two years and others by around five years. The funding for this acceleration is sourced from the Acceleration Fund, which holds DKK 50 billion for the years 2025-2026.
Brigadier General Michael Thøgersen, head of the 1st Brigade, welcomed the expedited provision of ammunition and capabilities. He emphasized that this advancement will significantly enhance the brigade’s training, development, and operational effectiveness as a heavy combat force.
