Danish Defence Increases Presence in Greenland and the Arctic

The Danish Defence will increase its presence in Greenland and the Arctic throughout the summer to practice operations in the High North. This initiative includes special operations forces conducting winter training, enhanced emergency preparedness, and increased surveillance.

F-16 fighter jets will be deployed at Kangerlussuaq airport to patrol Greenland’s west coast. Two helicopters will provide support for operational tasks, and a frigate will assist with maritime duties in the Arctic.

Students from the Arctic Basic Education program will also participate in strengthened land guarding of critical infrastructure. Naalakkersuisut, the Greenlandic government, emphasizes the importance of local involvement in these activities.

“The security policy situation requires the Danish Defence to train its ability to operate in and around Greenland,” stated Vivian Motzfeldt, Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs and Research.

Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen added, “The Defence’s increased presence must take place with attention to local conditions and the specific security policy challenges in Greenland.”
