The construction of “The Dome,” a major extension project at the Aros art museum in Aarhus, Denmark, has been delayed and will incur an additional cost of 6.7 million kroner. Aarhus Municipality, the developer of the project, announced the setback in a press release.
The delay stems from the bankruptcy of the supplier responsible for the dome’s lid earlier this year. A timeline for the lid’s completion remains uncertain, but it will not be finished this year as initially projected.
“The Dome” is the centerpiece of Aros’ expansion, “The Next Level,” which includes a 1000-square-meter underground exhibition gallery. American artist James Turrell designed “The Dome,” which has a diameter of 40 meters and a ceiling height of 15 meters.
To cover the additional 6.7 million kroner in costs, the municipality will reduce Aros’ operating grant by 200,000 kroner annually.
The total cost of the expansion project was initially estimated at nearly 200 million kroner. Salling Fondene, Ny Carlsbergfondet, and an anonymous donor have provided substantial funding for the construction, with the remaining costs covered by Aros and Aarhus Municipality.
