The unusual harmony within Denmark’s coalition government, comprised of the Social Democrats and Venstre (Liberals), is attributed to their shared pursuit of power and a convergence in policy. Key figures from both parties highlight a mutual respect and understanding that transcends traditional political divides.
This unprecedented cooperation stems from a recognition that both parties are fundamentally driven by the desire to govern and make decisions. According to Nick Hækkerup, former Minister of Justice, Health, Trade and European Affairs, and Defense, the two parties find that they mirror each other, as both prioritize the acquisition and exercise of power. This shared ambition fosters a sense of mutual respect and allows them to work together effectively.
Further, there’s a growing understanding that the Social Democrats and Venstre share similar values and policy goals. Sten Kristensen, former press officer in the Social Democrats, notes that their stances on value politics and welfare policy have converged, while their economic policies are fundamentally aligned. This alignment has made it easier for the parties to collaborate, especially with Venstre’s diminished prospects of securing the prime minister post independently.
Several political figures also emphasize the role of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in fostering this collaborative environment. Jens Kloppenborg-Skrumsager, deputy mayor for Venstre, praises Frederiksen’s leadership, describing her as a unifying figure who commands respect and has led the Social Democrats to a more pragmatic and responsible position.
The presence of the Moderates as a third party in the coalition also contributes to the harmony between the Social Democrats and Venstre. According to Jens Rohde, former political spokesperson for Venstre, the Moderates act as a “lightning rod,” absorbing potential conflicts and facilitating smoother cooperation between the two dominant parties.
