Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark has urged the nation to rearm, not only militarily but also spiritually, in response to current global challenges. Speaking at Rødding Højskole, Denmark’s oldest folk high school, Frederiksen emphasized the need to combat misinformation and strengthen societal foundations.
Frederiksen highlighted the importance of engaging with longer forms of content, such as books and news from reputable media, rather than relying solely on social media. She stressed that citizens should seek challenges and strive for wisdom and societal development.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that the world has been overly naive regarding the impact of screens over the past decade. She stated that the widespread use of technology has had adverse effects on well-being, childhood experiences, interpersonal relationships, democracy, and concentration. Frederiksen admitted that the uncritical acceptance of new technology was a mistake.
In February, the government announced a ban on mobile phones and private tablets in schools and after-school centers. Frederiksen emphasized that further measures are necessary, advocating for the promotion of reading to counterbalance screen time. She quoted Danish author Karen Blixen, comparing reading to traveling without packing.
Frederiksen asserted that books and newspapers were crucial to Denmark’s development and that reading is a superpower. She believes reading cultivates empathy, broadens horizons, and provides a temporary escape. The Prime Minister also encouraged citizens to maintain a critical mindset and engage in respectful dialogue, especially in public debates and on social media.
