Prevalence of Wood-Burning Stoves in Danish Homes Decreases

The number of wood-burning stoves in Danish homes has decreased, with approximately one in five households owning one. A recent survey from Statistics Denmark reveals there are about 675,000 wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, or similar heating devices in year-round residences across the country.

This figure marks a decline from 775,000 in 2021 and 888,000 in 2015. The survey, conducted in 2023, is based on 19,000 responses.

Only 13 percent of homes with a wood-burning stove use it as their primary heating source. There are significant variations in wood-burning stove ownership across different municipalities.

The reduction in wood-burning stoves is attributed to several factors, including efforts to reduce particulate pollution and a shift towards renewable energy sources. Older models are being phased out or upgraded to more environmentally friendly versions. Homeowners are also transitioning from fossil fuels like oil and gas to district heating and heat pumps.

Regulations have been implemented to address particulate pollution from wood-burning stoves. Since August 2021, it has been mandatory to remove or replace wood-burning stoves manufactured before 2003 during home sales. Municipalities can also ban stoves older than 2008 in areas with access to district heating or gas. According to the Ministry of Environment, wood burning is the largest source of particulate pollution in Denmark. Requirements for particle emissions from new wood-burning stoves were introduced in 2008.
