Jan Peters is stepping down as chairman of the board of AaB and resigning from the board of directors, according to an announcement from the football club. This decision comes amidst significant unrest, including relegation, coaching changes, and fan dissatisfaction.
The German investor group Sports Strategy Excellence 22 (SSE22) is also withdrawing from active involvement in the operation of AaB. This change is in response to feedback and criticism received by SSE22.
Jesper Brøchner Thing has been proposed as the new chairman and will be up for election at an extraordinary general meeting.
The recent developments in and around the club have highlighted the need for change, according to Peters. His departure is intended as a sign of the ambition to prioritize what is best for AaB.
SSE22, including Jan Peters, initially invested in the club in March 2023. They later acquired a majority stake after contributing DKK 45 million.
The club’s troubles began with the firing of head coach Menno van Dam shortly before relegation from the Superliga. Subsequently, head coach Kristoffer Wichmann was dismissed after only five games, and sporting director James Gow also lost his position.
These events led to widespread criticism of Jan Peters and SSE22, with fans demanding Peters’ resignation.
Most recently, sponsor 3F Aalborg called for AaB to address a potential bullying incident within the club. The alleged case involves former head coach Menno van Dam.
