Danish Media Outlets Remove Allegedly Israeli Government-Sponsored Advertisements

Several Danish media outlets have removed advertisements allegedly funded by the Israeli government due to violations of their advertising guidelines. The advertisements, which appeared on platforms including TV 2, Ekstra Bladet, and Berlingske Media, lacked a clearly identified sender and, in some cases, resembled editorial content.

TV 2 removed an advertising video from its editorial live blog that urged Hamas to release hostages and lay down its weapons. The media outlet also excluded the advertiser from its systems. The advertisement violated TV 2’s guidelines requiring a clear sender and prohibiting advertisements from resembling editorial content.

Ekstra Bladet also experienced the advertisements and subsequently blocked them. Berlingske Media displayed banner advertisements highlighting the threat to Israel from Hamas. These ads quoted a senior Hamas member stating the organization would repeat its October 7 attack on Israel.

Berlingske Media removed the advertisement because it lacked a clear sender, a crucial requirement for their advertising standards. Although the advertisements identified the sender as the Israeli Government Advertising Agency, verification of this claim was not possible, according to Berlingske Media. The advertisements were purchased through Google’s advertising platform.
