Proposal to Introduce Right to Roam in Denmark

Denmark is considering introducing the “allemansret,” or right to roam, which would allow free camping in public natural areas. The Social Liberal Party (De Radikale) is spearheading the effort, advocating for access to all public forests, natural spaces, and the Danish coastline.

The proposal is fueled by the upcoming green tripartite agreement, which aims to create over 400,000 hectares of new nature in Denmark. De Radikale argues that since the public is contributing to the creation of these spaces, they should have the right to enjoy them freely.

While acknowledging the differences between Denmark and its Scandinavian neighbors, Sweden and Norway, where the right to roam is already established, proponents emphasize the need for responsible implementation. They stress that respect for private property is crucial, suggesting a buffer zone, such as 300 meters, between public access and private gardens.

Concerns have been raised about the potential impact on Denmark’s smaller and more fragile natural environment. To address this, the proposal includes provisions for strictly protected areas where wildlife and vegetation can remain undisturbed. Supporters believe that despite the concerns, there are still vast forests with ample opportunities for increased public enjoyment, especially with the expansion of forested areas.
