Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a string of burglaries targeting churches in Jutland and Funen, Denmark. The Police of Southeast Jutland confirmed the arrests and the discovery of furniture believed to be stolen from 23 different churches.
The arrested include two 37-year-old men from Kolding and a 35-year-old woman from Fredericia. They were remanded in custody for four weeks following a preliminary hearing at the Court in Kolding.
During the hearing, one man admitted to committing ten of the burglaries, while the other confessed to six. The 35-year-old woman pleaded not guilty and reserved the right to appeal. One man and the woman are charged with burglary in 23 churches while the other man is charged with involvement in six burglaries.
A 36-year-old woman has also been charged with buying furniture originating from the burglaries. The thefts resulted in the loss of items worth at least half a million kroner from the churches.
The stolen goods consist mainly of designer chairs by Børge Mogensen and Hans Wegner, as well as lamps, baptismal fonts, microphones, and cash. Many of the stolen items were then offered for sale on online marketplaces.
The thefts occurred in various locations across Jutland and Funen. The investigation was initiated after a citizen reported suspicions of possessing stolen goods.
The investigation culminated in a coordinated operation on Monday, involving searches of multiple addresses in the Kolding and Fredericia areas. The discovery of stolen items led to the arrest of the 36-year-old woman for receiving stolen goods.
Authorities suspect the arrested individuals may be responsible for additional burglaries. The police are continuing their investigation and are exploring the possibility of charging more individuals with receiving stolen goods.
