Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s paint-covered suit from 2003 to be exhibited at the National Museum

The National Museum has acquired the suit worn by former Danish Prime Minister and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen when he was doused in red paint in 2003. The incident occurred after a Foreign Policy Committee meeting regarding Denmark’s involvement in the Iraq War.

The suit, along with the accompanying shirt, was donated to the museum by the Prime Minister’s Office with Rasmussen’s permission. The museum’s acquisition highlights the event’s significant impact on security protocols at Christiansborg, the Danish Parliament.

Following the paint attack, stricter regulations were implemented regarding movement within Christiansborg, along with an expanded security presence. Anne-Mette Marchen Andersen, a museum inspector, emphasized that the suit tells a story about a pivotal moment that reshaped security measures in Danish politics.

The suit’s journey to the National Museum was delayed as it had been missing for some time. Despite the museum receiving a piece of paint-stained carpet from the attack years ago, the suit’s whereabouts remained unknown until recently. It is unclear whether the suit was misplaced within Christiansborg or stored elsewhere.

Currently, there are no immediate plans to feature the suit in a specific exhibition. However, it will be preserved for potential future use. The suit is identified as Yves Saint Laurent, while the shirt is a Stenström brand.

The National Museum’s collection includes other historically significant clothing items, such as Andreas Mogensen’s spacesuit and the dress Sofie Linde wore during her ‘Me too speech’ at the Zulu Comedy Gala in 2020.
