Denmark to Present Economic Plan for Achieving NATO Strength Targets in 2025

Denmark is set to unveil an economic plan in the fall of 2025 outlining how the nation will meet NATO’s strength targets. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen following a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The Prime Minister emphasized the significant financial implications of bolstering Denmark’s defense capabilities, stating that “massive investments” will be required. She acknowledged the trade-offs involved, noting that every billion spent on defense represents funds that could be allocated elsewhere.

Despite the costs, Frederiksen stressed the paramount importance of peace and security, asserting that “if we don’t have our peace and our security, we have nothing.”

The Prime Minister has voiced support for a proposal urging all NATO members to raise their defense spending to 3.5 percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). While the proposal suggests a 2032 deadline, Frederiksen believes this timeline is too distant, expressing concerns about Russia’s potential to attack other European countries, including NATO members, in the near future.
