Be Cautious of Quick Fixes and Untested Ideas in Uncertain Times

In times of political and economic instability, there’s a surge in new and recycled ideas aiming to solve pressing issues. However, these proposals often lack thorough debate and testing, potentially leading to ineffective or counterproductive policies. Experts advise caution and critical evaluation during these periods.

The COVID-19 pandemic serves as a prime example of hasty decision-making in a crisis. Seemingly harmless measures, like directing joggers one way around a lake, were implemented without proper consideration. More significant interventions, such as school closures, had long-lasting psychological effects on young people. The mink scandal exemplified this, where a pre-existing ideological agenda led to a legally dubious and costly decision, impacting both mink farmers and taxpayers.

Currently, amid global tensions and economic uncertainty, ill-considered proposals are emerging. Former President Trump’s trade war, based on outdated economic views, imposed tariffs without a real basis. Domestically, a proposal for systematic total surveillance of citizens has been put forward, although its processing has been postponed. Additionally, two ministers have suggested that the EU create a state-controlled alternative to social media platforms, seemingly overlooking the public sector’s history of IT challenges.

Another example is a suggestion for mandatory conscription of up to three years for individuals under 60. While defense improvements are needed, the societal costs of such a broad and lengthy call-up, including lost time in the labor market, would be substantial.

Therefore, it is essential to exercise extra caution when evaluating quickly formulated ideas that may sound appealing in uncertain times.
