Jakob Fuglsang will conclude his tenure with Israel-Premier Tech following Sunday’s final stage of the Giro d’Italia. The Danish cyclist shared this news on the team’s website.
Fuglsang hinted at a possible continuation of his career, suggesting he might participate in the Tour of Denmark in August, potentially representing the national team.
“I have had an amazing career,” Fuglsang stated. “It has brought me more than I had hoped for. But all good things come to an end at some point. It’s time to enjoy more time with my family and let the young people come forward.”
He further added, “So Sunday will be my last race for Israel-Premier Tech. One last task, the last days in the Giro, and then maybe see you in Denmark sometime in August.”
The 40-year-old had previously announced that this season would be his last as a professional, coinciding with an extension of his contract with Israel-Premier Tech.
He clarified that the contract extension was for seven months, set to expire soon. During this period, his primary role was to support Canadian cyclist Derek Gee in the general classification of major stage races.
So far, this mission has progressed positively in the Giro d’Italia, where Gee currently holds fourth place overall, trailing leader Isaac Del Toro (UAE) by just under two minutes, prior to two crucial mountain stages.
Throughout his 17-year professional career, Fuglsang has achieved 27 victories. His accomplishments include a stage win in the Vuelta a España, two overall victories in the Critérium du Dauphiné, an Olympic silver medal in the road race, and wins in both Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Lombardy Round, prestigious cycling monuments. He has also secured three Tour of Denmark victories in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
