The Danish Parliament has approved a new law granting the Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, extensive authority to bypass regulations and rights that could potentially slow down military construction projects. This decision comes amidst Denmark’s ongoing military build-up.
The legislation empowers the Minister to override municipal authority and grant exemptions for projects, leading to faster case resolutions. In certain instances, the Minister can also decide that planning and environmental regulations will be superseded for specific construction or activities within the defence sector.
While acknowledging the law’s sweeping nature, the Minister has included a sunset clause, ensuring its expiration at the end of 2028.
The vote on the law was briefly interrupted by activists.
Several organizations, along with political parties such as Alternativet and Enhedslisten, have voiced criticism of the bill. These parties, along with Borgernes Parti and independent Theresa Scavenius, voted against its passage.
The Minister of Defence has previously indicated a willingness to compensate residents who may be affected by the construction of arms production or military facilities as part of Denmark’s military expansion.
