Independent Member of Parliament Mike Fonseca has sued Member of Parliament Monika Rubin following statements she made regarding his relationship with a then 15-year-old girl back in 2023. Rubin confirmed that she received a summons from Fonseca and stands by her criticism, stating that adults who pursue relationships with children are a problem.
The lawsuit follows Rubin’s earlier criticism of Fonseca’s relationship, which led to his departure from the Moderates party. She stated that Fonseca had demanded 100,000 kroner and threatened legal action, which prompted her to state that one should not be able to threaten their way into silence.
Fonseca’s relationship with the underage girl was deemed a violation of the Moderates’ code of conduct, which prohibits sexual relations with individuals under 18 years of age. Rubin expressed her anger and disappointment, accusing Fonseca of having a distorted approach to young people and their sexuality.
Rubin, who is currently on maternity leave but normally serves as the political spokesperson for the Moderates, also alleged that Fonseca’s actions constituted grooming, which is a punishable offense. However, in January 2024, police halted an investigation into Fonseca for grooming, stating there was no reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.
The specific grounds for Fonseca’s compensation claim remain unknown. Ritzau is attempting to reach Fonseca for comment. It has also been revealed that the Moderates offered Fonseca 370,000 kroner in 2023 to relinquish his mandate, which could then be retained within the party.
