Headspace Denmark Launches “Switch Off Together” Campaign to Promote Better Screen Habits

Headspace Denmark is launching the “Switch Off Together” campaign, culminating in a nationwide mobile phone switch-off on September 21st, to encourage healthier screen habits among Danes. The initiative aims to address concerns about excessive screen time and its impact on presence and mental well-being.

The campaign seeks to foster a collective effort to reduce screen use, with 58% of the population expressing a desire to do so, according to an Epinion survey commissioned by Headspace Denmark. Nearly half of the population, 47%, believe they are addicted to their mobiles.

Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, former Prime Minister and founder of Headspace Denmark, emphasizes the importance of presence and genuine connection. He highlights the feedback from young people who value attentive listening and believes adults often miss such interactions.

Trine Hammershøy, director of Det Sociale Netværk and Headspace Denmark, stresses the significance of collective action and open conversations about screen usage. She points out that the campaign is not just about individual efforts but about creating a shared understanding and reducing the dominance of screens in social interactions.

Leading up to the September 21st switch-off, Headspace Denmark, along with figures like actress Mille Dinesen and Minister for Digitalization Caroline Stage, will promote engaging “offline activities.” This initiative builds on a previous campaign that encouraged a two-hour mobile phone switch-off, with families expressing a desire for longer screen-free periods, particularly at the request of children.

Headspace centers nationwide will be open on Sunday, offering various activities. Headspace Denmark, an initiative under Det Sociale Netværk, focuses on promoting mental health among vulnerable children, young people, and adults aged 12 to 25.
