Social Democrats Seek a Center-Right Prime Minister Candidate at Bourgeois Convention

The Social Democrats launched a campaign at the bourgeois convention in Fredericia on Saturday, seeking a center-right prime minister candidate. The governing party drove a truck with a banner to the entrance of Messe C, where Liberal Alliance, Danmarksdemokraterne, Dansk Folkeparti, and De Konservative were holding their joint event.

The banner read “Honk if you see a blue prime minister candidate,” highlighting the perceived lack of a clear challenger to current Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S). Frederiksen is the only candidate who has declared her intention to run for prime minister in the next election, which must be held by the end of October of next year.

The Social Democrats’ tactic appeared to have little impact on the bourgeois party leaders or convention attendees. The convention drew an estimated 700-800 participants from the four parties.

The convention aimed to demonstrate solidarity among the four center-right opposition parties and present a unified center-right platform. The truck, which initially parked near the entrance, was later moved to a more inconspicuous location in the parking lot.

De Konservative and Dansk Folkeparti have publicly stated their preference for Venstre chairman Troels Lund Poulsen as the center-right bloc’s prime minister candidate. Danmarksdemokraterne and Liberal Alliance have been less explicit in their endorsement. Troels Lund Poulsen, currently Minister of Defence in the SVM government, has not announced his candidacy for prime minister.
