Copenhagen Daycare Proposal Benefits Wealthy Families

A proposal to eliminate user fees for daycare in Copenhagen could significantly benefit high-income families. Calculations from the think tank Cepos indicate that a considerable number of families with million-dollar incomes would gain from the plan.

The proposal, put forth by mayoral candidate Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil, aims to make nurseries and kindergartens free for all children in Copenhagen. The average household income for families with children in Copenhagen is reportedly DKK 1.32 million per year.

According to figures, the wealthiest ten percent of families with children in Copenhagen earn over DKK 2 million annually. This accounts for approximately 2,690 families. A family with two children could save over DKK 60,000 per year under the proposed system.

Cepos research director Karsten Bo Larsen suggests that families with children in Copenhagen are financially secure. Larsen stated that these families are relatively well-off compared to families without children.

The proposal is estimated to cost DKK 800 million per year.
