Randers Municipality to Strengthen Environmental Administration Following Nordic Waste Criticism

Randers Municipality is planning to bolster its technical and environmental administration in response to a critical legal investigation into the Nordic Waste case. Mayor Torben Hansen announced the move, which will include further education initiatives to enhance employee skills.

The decision follows the presentation of a legal investigation on Monday, which criticized the municipality’s oversight of Nordic Waste, a soil remediation company, prior to a significant landslide on December 19, 2023. The investigation concluded that while the landslide might not have been entirely preventable, earlier detection could have reduced its scale.

Hansen acknowledged the criticism outlined in the 666-page report, stating, “There are some things we need to do better. There is some learning in this, and it would be foolish if we did not use it.”

The possibility of staffing changes within the administration was also discussed, with Hansen noting differing viewpoints on the matter.

Claus Berggren, the 1st deputy mayor, echoed Hansen’s call for a stronger technical and environmental administration. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation of the department and did not rule out potential staffing consequences. Berggren stressed the importance of establishing a factual basis to determine accountability.

Hansen plans to present his specific proposals at a city council meeting in either September or October.
