Danish supercomputer to study women’s health

A powerful supercomputer in Denmark will be used to analyze data related to women’s health issues, including menstrual cycles, infertility, and endometriosis. The goal is to improve understanding of these conditions and develop new treatments.

The project is a collaboration with the Danish Centre for AI Innovation (DCAI), which grants access to the Gefion supercomputer.

David Westergaard, a lecturer at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and head of Data Science at the Gynecological-Obstetrical Department at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital, is leading the effort alongside other researchers and doctors.

Westergaard emphasized the historical underrepresentation of research into women’s diseases due to the complexity of female biology. He noted that hormonal fluctuations, pregnancies, and menopause contribute to more complex data sets.

Gefion, a top-ranked supercomputer, allows researchers to analyze and integrate data in new ways, running sophisticated models in minutes instead of days or weeks.

Researchers are currently focused on adenomyosis, a disease related to endometriosis, using artificial intelligence models to analyze ultrasound scans and identify the condition. The supercomputer significantly speeds up the analysis process, reducing the time from months or years to days or hours.
