iPhone users of the Rejsekort app can now select “While Using the App” for location access, according to Rejsekort og Rejseplan A/S. This update addresses previous concerns regarding constant location tracking.
Previously, the app only offered the “Always” setting, which meant continuous access to the user’s location, even when the app was not actively in use. This raised concerns last spring from data experts and the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet).
Customer Director at Rejsekort og Rejseplan A/S, Jens Willars, stated that the company never accessed user data when the app wasn’t in use. The new setting aligns the app’s functionality with the company’s existing practices.
In early 2024, the company claimed it was “not possible” to offer different location settings, citing the need to ensure ticket validity even if the app was accidentally closed. However, the app’s supplier has now recoded the settings to resolve this issue, according to Willars.
The company acknowledges the importance of this issue for its customers and invested significant effort in finding a solution. Willars emphasizes that the app’s functionality remains unchanged.
The primary change is that users can now be more confident that data is only collected when the app is in use.
The setting is available since Thursday and it has been tested by 135,000 iPhone users before the update.
Android users have always had the option to limit location data access.
Rejsekort og Rejseplan A/S noted that the app is a standard product used in several European countries and they did not anticipate the location settings becoming a problem in Denmark.
The cost of recoding the app is currently undisclosed.
