Analysis of Mette Frederiksen’s Pro-EU Speech and Denmark’s Role in Europe

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s recent speech at the close of Parliament has been lauded as a significant endorsement of the European Union and a call for greater European cooperation. The speech signals a shift in Denmark’s approach to the EU, advocating for deeper integration and a more proactive role within the Union.

Frederiksen’s strong support for the EU comes at a critical time, with Europe facing numerous challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the need for digital independence. She emphasizes the importance of a unified European response to these issues and argues that Denmark should be at the heart of the EU and NATO.

The Prime Minister’s change in attitude towards common EU debt is particularly noteworthy. While she previously expressed skepticism about it, she now advocates for EU countries to jointly issue debt to address shared challenges. She also stresses that such common debt does not mean Denmark is liable for other countries’ national debt.

Frederiksen highlights the need for a European digital strategy, drawing inspiration from Germany’s efforts to modernize and Schleswig-Holstein’s move to reduce reliance on American tech giants. She cautions against complacency and encourages Denmark to learn from other countries, particularly France, which is making strides in artificial intelligence.

The speech also addresses the need for Denmark to embrace European collaboration and avoid symbolic politics that hinder integration. Frederiksen suggests ending restrictions on foreign ownership of holiday homes in Denmark and calls for the country to join the Eurozone. She hopes to get Norway to join as well, arguing that economic and military power are intertwined.

Frederiksen’s vision includes improving competitiveness, establishing a budget for the next seven years, prioritizing Ukraine’s EU membership, identifying common projects for joint funding, and pursuing digital independence. She also advocates for finalizing free trade agreements with South American countries and establishing new trade with India.

She acknowledges that the EU has flaws, but emphasizes that it is “our family,” and expresses gratitude to Prime Minister Frederiksen for articulating this vision. Denmark’s upcoming EU presidency presents an opportunity to advance these goals and strengthen Europe’s position in the world.
