New Strategy for Personalized Medicine Agreed Upon in Denmark

The Danish government and Danish Regions have reached an agreement on a new strategy to advance the use of personalized medicine tailored to individual patients. This initiative was announced in a press release from the Ministry of the Interior and Health.

The strategy aims to better account for individual differences in personality, genetics, and reactions to illness and treatment. The healthcare system will leverage health data and artificial intelligence to detect diseases earlier and customize treatment plans for each patient.

Minister for the Interior and Health Sophie Løhde emphasized the importance of targeting treatment to the individual patient through improved use of health data. The strategy includes 13 initiatives and is supported by a DKK 90 million allocation over three years.

Personalized medicine could be applied to cancer patients, using gene analysis to determine the most effective treatment and avoid ineffective or harmful therapies. It also aims to improve healthcare for children with hereditary high cholesterol.

Anders Kühnau, chairman of Danish Regions, highlighted the potential for improving patients’ quality of life. The strategy will strengthen the national variant database, facilitating clinicians’ access to information about genetic variants that may cause disease.
