DRTV to clarify wording regarding username creation after Data Protection Agency inquiry

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) will adjust the wording used during user profile creation on its streaming service, DRTV, to prevent potential misunderstandings. This decision comes in response to inquiries from the Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet).

The specific change concerns the phrase “Tell us your name,” which DR acknowledges could be misinterpreted. The adjustment will clarify that the username is optional.

The Data Protection Agency initiated the investigation following complaints about DRTV’s login requirement for accessing content beyond live channels. Users are required to provide an email and username to access the full range of DRTV’s offerings.

DR emphasizes that users are free to choose any name and are not required to provide their real identity. While acknowledging the technical feasibility of allowing access to content without login, DR maintains that such a solution would not adequately support its public service obligations.

DR argues that the login requirement is necessary to provide functionalities expected by users, such as the “watch next” feature across devices, aligning DRTV with other modern streaming platforms and complying with the public service contract.

The Data Protection Agency has confirmed that it is further investigating the case based on DR’s latest response but cannot yet provide a timeline for the investigation’s conclusion or the potential outcome.
