The Danish Handball Federation has introduced a new ranking system to determine qualification for European handball tournaments, addressing concerns raised by clubs regarding communication clarity. The announcement follows a controversial end to last season, where differing interpretations of the rules led to disputes over Champions League eligibility.
The new system aims to provide a more transparent allocation of European tickets.
The Danish champion will automatically receive the first Champions League ticket. A second ticket, if available, will be awarded to the regular season winner. The DM silver medalist will be considered for a third Champions League spot. The cup winner will secure a place in the European League, but will not be eligible for a Champions League ticket under this new format.
Past errors had led to GOG’s men’s team and Ikast Håndbold’s women’s team being unfairly denied Champions League spots. Skjern Håndbold were also left disappointed last season after believing their silver medal would allow them to apply for the Champions League.
The federation plans to review the ranking list annually, with a more thorough evaluation every three years involving various stakeholders.
The Danish Handball Federation aims to implement any future changes to the ranking system well in advance of the start of the tournament.
