Danish Airport Employees Help Reopen Nuuk Airport

Nuuk Airport is set to resume international traffic on Thursday after being closed on Wednesday due to a temporary suspension of security control for international travelers. A team of certified security control personnel from two Danish airports has arrived in Nuuk to address the issue.

The Danish Transport Authority issued the suspension on Tuesday, citing that the further training of the airport’s employees in screening travelers to foreign countries did not meet all the requirements. This suspension forced international travelers to undergo security control at either Kangerlussuaq Airport or Narsarsuaq Airport before departing Greenland.

Greenland Airports acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the closure, stating on Facebook that they deeply regret the disruption to airlines and travelers, and are working intensively to ensure a good experience at the airport. They also stated that they are working to ensure that the security control staff in Nuuk “can resume their function as quickly as possible.”

The new airport in Nuuk, a significant infrastructure project, has faced numerous challenges throughout its development. The completion of the new 2200-meter runway has made it possible for larger aircraft to fly directly to the Greenlandic capital from Copenhagen, Europe, and other parts of the world. The airport received its first direct flight from Denmark in November of last year, followed by the first direct flight from the USA in June. Due to the suspension, a flight from New York to the USA turned around in the air over Canada on Tuesday afternoon Greenland time.
