The Alternative Proposes Guarantee of Clean Drinking Water in Denmark

The Alternative party has proposed a new political initiative to ensure clean drinking water for all citizens in Denmark. The proposal was unveiled at the party’s summer group meeting on Wednesday, highlighting concerns about the increasing threats to the nation’s drinking water supply.

Franciska Rosenkilde, the party’s political leader, emphasized the urgency of the situation. The Alternative’s plan includes several key measures. A central component is an immediate ban on the use of PFAS and other fluorine pesticides in Danish agriculture, with a complete phase-out of these substances targeted for the end of 2025.

Looking further ahead, the party aims to eliminate all pesticides from Danish agriculture by 2035 to safeguard both the environment and drinking water resources. While some questioned the timeline, political spokesman Torsten Gejl defended the 2035 target, acknowledging that removing pesticides from agriculture requires substantial change and a “small revolution.”

Recent data from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency revealed an increase in the agricultural use of PFAS from 2021 to 2024. Despite this rise, the use of pesticides containing PFAS has seen some reduction. Earlier this year, 23 pesticides containing PFAS were banned due to their tendency to break down and contaminate drinking water sources.

The Alternative’s proposal also seeks to improve public access to information about drinking water quality. The party suggests creating a user-friendly website and mobile application providing citizens with readily available data about the quality of their local drinking water. The goal is to make accessing water quality information as simple as checking the weather.

The proposal recognizes that phasing out all pesticides in Danish agriculture will likely require additional financial support for restructuring. The Alternative suggests that these funds could be sourced from the increased economic leeway observed in the past year. According to a recent Voxmeter poll, The Alternative currently holds 2.1 percent of the votes, with a statistical uncertainty of 0.9 percentage points.
