Viborg HK Handball Team Faces Turmoil with Coach Departure and Player Contract Termination

Viborg HK’s women’s handball team is facing significant challenges ahead of the new season, following the termination of top scorer Christina Pedersen’s contract and the immediate departure of head coach Ole Bitsch. These events have left the team without a coach and a key player just days before the season’s start.

Anders Friis, previously the assistant coach, has been promoted to head coach and will make his debut in a cup match against Holstebro. Friis aims to stabilize the team amidst the recent disruptions.

Managing director Jens Steffensen, a former coach, will temporarily assist Friis, but plans to return to his administrative role soon. Steffensen acknowledged the unconventional situation but emphasized the need to calm the team.

The decision to terminate Pedersen’s contract means losing a player who scored 164 goals last season. However, Steffensen hopes that the regained peace within the squad will empower other players to step up.

Steffensen stated that the disagreements with Pedersen created difficulties that impacted the team’s harmony. Removing these issues is expected to improve the team’s dynamics.

Friis, who witnessed Pedersen’s suspension during season preparations, feels that the troubles were more prominent outside the team than within. He has observed a balanced and focused playing squad during training sessions.

Steffensen declined to provide specific details about the cooperation difficulties with Pedersen. Both parties have agreed not to discuss the matter further, and the club wishes Pedersen well in Norway, where she will continue her career.

The director expressed his desire for stability and a forward-looking approach after the recent turmoil. Following the cup match against Holstebro, the team will begin their league season against Ringkøbing.
