Danish Foreign Minister to Summon US Diplomat Over Greenland Interference Concerns

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has summoned a top US diplomat for a meeting following reports of potential American interference in Greenland. The action comes after the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) reported on the activities of three American men and their possible attempts to infiltrate Greenland.

The Foreign Ministry conveyed Rasmussen’s decision to Ritzau, emphasizing the unacceptability of any attempts to meddle in the Kingdom’s internal affairs. Rasmussen stressed that ongoing interest from foreign actors in Greenland and its position within the Kingdom should not be surprising.

Mark Stroh, the American chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Denmark, has been called to Asiatisk Plads for a meeting. The US currently lacks an ambassador in Denmark since Alan Leventhal’s departure in January.

DR reported, citing anonymous sources, that individuals with ties to former US President Donald Trump are allegedly attempting to infiltrate Greenland. The report also mentioned that Greenland has been on Trump’s wish list as a future part of the United States. It remains unclear whether these individuals are acting independently.

The White House has not responded to DR’s inquiry regarding whether the US government has directed US citizens to conduct influence operations in Greenland. A US Embassy representative in Copenhagen stated that the US government does not control the actions of private citizens and that individual Americans may have interests in Greenland.

It is uncommon for Denmark to summon representatives from allied nations. However, a similar situation occurred in May when the then-American chargé d’affaires, Jennifer Hall Godfrey, was summoned following reports of increased US espionage against Greenland.
