Denmark has summoned a top US diplomat following reports of American individuals attempting to exert influence in Greenland. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen requested the meeting with the American chargé d’affaires after the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) reported on the activities of men with ties to former US President Donald Trump.
The Foreign Ministry views any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark as unacceptable. Rasmussen stated that increasing foreign interest in Greenland and its position within the Kingdom should not be surprising, but any attempts to influence its future would be met with resistance.
Mark Stroh, the current American chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Denmark, has been requested to attend the meeting at Asiatisk Plads, the location of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen. The US currently lacks an ambassador in Denmark since Alan Leventhal’s departure in January.
DR reported, citing anonymous sources, that individuals connected to Trump are attempting to infiltrate Greenland, a territory that Trump previously expressed interest in acquiring for the United States. The report remains unclear whether these individuals are acting independently.
It is uncommon for Denmark to summon representatives from allied nations for discussions. However, a similar event occurred in May when the Foreign Ministry summoned then-American chargé d’affaires Jennifer Hall Godfrey after reports that the US would increase espionage activities against Greenland.
