FC Copenhagen has decided to prevent 19-year-old Victor Froholdt from participating in the upcoming U21 European Championship. Coach Jacob Neestrup stated that the decision was made in the best interest of both the player and the club, citing international football rules that allow clubs to block players from the tournament.
Neestrup emphasized that Froholdt needs a vacation after a long and demanding season, in which he played almost every minute, particularly during the spring. Before Thursday’s cup final against Silkeborg, Froholdt has played 52 club matches and one national team match this season. The decision was reached jointly by Neestrup and FCK sports director Sune Smith-Nielsen.
The club believes a break is crucial for Froholdt’s freshness and preparation for the Superligaen and important European qualifying matches following a short pre-season. Neestrup dismissed the idea that the U21 European Championship would be a valuable showcase for interested clubs abroad, arguing that the national team provides the ultimate platform for Danish players.
Froholdt was not consulted in the decision. Other Danish national team players, including Lucas Høgsberg, Mika Biereth, and Patrick Dorgu, have also been blocked from participating in the U21 European Championship by their respective clubs.
