AaB Sacks Head Coach and Sports Director After Relegation

AaB has dismissed head coach Kristoffer Wichmann and sports director James Gow following the club’s relegation from the Superliga. Chairman Jan Peters cited unsatisfactory on-field performance and differing visions for the future as the reasons for Wichmann’s dismissal.

Wichmann’s tenure was short-lived, having been appointed on April 23 with only five matches remaining in the relegation play-offs after Menno van Dam was fired. He had signed a contract extending until the summer of 2027. According to Peters, “We were not successful on the field… we see things differently when we look into the future.”

James Gow, who had been with AaB since October 2023 and served as sports director since the summer of 2024, has also departed.

Jan Peters, representing the German investor group Sports Strategy Excellence 22 (SSE22), acknowledged the club’s mistakes and took full responsibility for the situation. He emphasized the group’s commitment to a long-term strategy for reconstructing the club, despite only being 12 months into their majority ownership. SSE22 acquired a stake in AaB in March 2023 and later increased its investment to become the majority shareholder in the spring of 2024.
