Anders Dam, the former CEO of Jyske Bank, who holds the record as Denmark’s longest-serving bank boss, has embraced a new, more relaxed chapter of his life since stepping down after 26 years. Dam, known for his long and successful career, is now prioritizing his health, pursuing new hobbies, and reflecting on the connection between money and happiness.
Since his retirement nearly two years ago, Dam has been reassessing his priorities and lifestyle. He emphasizes the importance of non-monetary aspects of happiness, stating that 95% of his happiest moments have nothing to do with money.
Dam grew up in a working-class neighborhood, later achieving significant financial success, but he believes true happiness stems from experiences like having children and experiencing love. While acknowledging that money can provide joy and security, he insists it’s not the primary driver of happiness. He actively avoids ultra-processed foods, and follows a healthier diet, leading to weight loss and improved well-being.
Looking back, Dam acknowledges the stress and sleep problems that came with his demanding job. He recognizes that his subconscious often sent him “mail” in the form of work-related problems disrupting his sleep. He now enjoys improved sleep and focuses on a variety of activities, including serving on boards, supporting Ukraine, spending time with his grandchildren, and volunteering as a scout leader. He expresses immense satisfaction with his current life, filled with joy and meaningful relationships. Dam emphasizes his good fortune and expresses gratitude for the life he has been given.
