Meta to Ban Political Ads on Facebook and Instagram in the EU

Meta will prohibit political advertisements on Facebook and Instagram in all EU countries starting in October, citing concerns about compliance with new European Union legislation regulating political advertising. The ban also encompasses ads related to “social causes,” defined by Meta as sensitive topics that are vigorously debated and that may influence election outcomes or current/proposed legislation.

Meta states that the EU’s legislation, known as the TTPA, places a broad range of obligations on its ads that it doesn’t believe it can adequately address. The EU describes the TTPA as aiming to “contribute to a well-functioning internal market for political advertising and support an open and fair political debate.” Despite the ban, Meta affirms the importance of online political advertising.

While political ads will be removed, politicians can still post on Meta’s platforms, as long as it is not done through advertising.

According to Vincent Hendricks, a professor at the Department of Communication at the University of Copenhagen, Meta’s decision could impact voter turnout, particularly in less prominent elections where political ads serve as reminders. He also suggests that lesser-known politicians and parties may face challenges, as they rely more on advertising to gain visibility. Politicians already prominent on social media platforms are not expected to be significantly affected.

The new EU law on political advertising will officially take effect on October 10, 2025.
