Danish Priest Questions the Meaning of Baptism in Modern Society

A Danish priest, Henrik Gade Jensen, has voiced concerns about the relevance of baptism in contemporary Denmark, questioning whether the practice aligns with the lives of most Danes. Jensen, a parish priest in the Diocese of Lolland-Falster, wonders why parents choose to baptize their children, suggesting that the act may simply be a continuation of tradition rather than a reflection of genuine faith.

Jensen’s observations come amid discussions about the role of Christian values in Danish society and the Danish National Church’s (Folkekirken) place in it. A recent survey revealed that a majority of Danes believe it is important for politicians to ensure that Denmark remains based on Christian values, while only a small percentage regularly attend church.

The priest notes a decline in the strength of religious faith compared to the past, suggesting it may be living on borrowed time without a revival. He acknowledges Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s efforts to promote spiritual build-up, which she considers as important as military build-up.

Jensen also points out that people often view membership in the Folkekirken and payment of church taxes as sufficient, leading them to believe they don’t need to attend church. He also thinks that the Folkekirken doesn’t make it easy for itself either, as he observes that people may stay away from the church because they feel they need to be holy to go there. Other churches are more present and at eye level.

Despite falling membership numbers in the Folkekirken, Jensen remains optimistic, believing the institution is strong. He emphasizes that Christianity is a personal matter and not a political one, encouraging individuals to live out their faith rather than simply advocating for more Christian values.
