A giraffe calf has died shortly after its birth in Knuthenborg Safari Park. The park announced the unfortunate event in a Facebook post on Friday.

The cause of the calf’s death is currently undetermined. A veterinarian has performed an autopsy, and samples have been submitted for analysis. Initial examinations revealed no obvious signs of disease, according to Jane Trolle, head of zookeepers in Knuthenborg.

“Everyone is very affected and sad about this situation, especially the zookeepers who are closest to it,” Trolle stated. The park has a history of successful giraffe breeding, and the mother of the deceased calf has previously given birth.

Trolle added, “Sometimes things just happen that you can’t control.” She emphasized the rarity of such an event, noting, “I have been in Knuthenborg for 20 years, and I have never experienced it before, so it is certainly not something we experience often.”
