Danish Municipalities Not Requiring Bomb Shelters in New Buildings

Despite having the legal authority to mandate the construction of bomb shelters in new buildings, Danish municipalities have not utilized this requirement in the past year. This is according to a survey conducted by DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation).

The DR survey, which included all 98 of Denmark’s municipalities, received responses from 59. The consistent finding was that no municipality had imposed requirements for building bomb shelters.

Paragraph 2 of the Law on Bomb Shelters grants municipal councils the option to order the construction of public bomb shelters in new buildings and facilities.

A statement from the Emergency Management Agency last year revealed a shortage of bomb shelter capacity in Denmark. The country’s bomb shelters provide 3.6 million spaces, covering only 61 percent of the population.
