Vejle captain Thomas Gundelund embraces new club project after failed move abroad

Vejle Boldklub captain Thomas Gundelund is enthusiastic about the team’s new direction after an anticipated transfer abroad did not materialize. Instead, Gundelund has committed to Vejle, encouraged by new player acquisitions and a revamped leadership structure.

Gundelund has pledged his allegiance to the club by signing a new contract, following the establishment of a new local ownership group and sporting management team, headed by sporting director Mikkel Hemmersam. The captain expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, citing the arrival of experienced players who can contribute valuable knowledge to the squad. He highlighted Wahid Faghir, despite being only 21, has experience in a top-5 league.

Gundelund’s continued presence at Vejle was unexpected, as the club had announced his departure at the end of the previous season upon the expiration of his contract. However, less than a month later, he extended his contract until 2028. Gundelund explained that offers from abroad were not compelling enough to lure him away from Vejle. He also stated that he maintained open communication with Vejle, which he was happy to consider.

Several prominent players have joined Vejle this summer, including Andrew Hjulsager, Mikkel Duelund, Christian Sørensen, Wahid Faghir, and Lasse Nielsen. Gundelund emphasized the importance of incorporating experienced Scandinavian players into the squad to share their expertise with the younger players.

The return of head coach Ivan Prelec has also been a positive development for Gundelund. He had previously resigned from his position in September of the previous year. Gundelund stated that Prelec’s return and their discussions about his role in the team greatly influenced his decision to stay.

Despite his commitment to Vejle, Gundelund still harbors aspirations of playing abroad in the future. He hopes to contribute to successful seasons with Vejle, enabling the club to benefit financially from a future transfer that would allow him to fulfill his dream.

Gundelund played the entire match in the season opener against Randers, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The team’s next challenge will be against the defending champions from FCK.
