Danish Parliament Allocates Over 300 Million Kroner to Culture from Gambling Revenue

Denmark’s cultural sector is set to receive a significant financial boost, with over 300 million kroner allocated from gambling revenue. This agreement, supported by all parties in Parliament except the Citizens’ Party, will distribute funds to a variety of projects and cultural institutions nationwide.

The funding originates from distribution funds, previously known as betting funds, which are derived from a portion of the profits from Danske Spil and other sources. These funds will support both established venues and new initiatives aimed at broadening access to art and culture.

Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen will receive 1.25 million kroner, with additional support earmarked for music festivals, including Folk Spot at Tønder Festival, Næstved Metalfest, and the Dansktop Festival in Svendborg.

New initiatives focused on bringing art and culture to socially vulnerable individuals and residents in public housing areas will also receive funding. Several grants from the previous year will continue, with some increases in support. Sølund Musikfestival will receive one million kroner, and Bakkens Hvile will receive 500,000 kroner.

Financial support for the Ukrainian cultural center in Copenhagen has been secured for the years 2025 to 2028, with a fixed annual amount of four million kroner.

Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting the importance of cultural rearmament in addition to national defense. The allocation of funds is still subject to approval by the Parliament’s Finance Committee before disbursement.
