Denmark and Ukraine have entered into a groundbreaking agreement for joint weapons production, making Denmark the first country to engage in such cooperation with Ukraine. The agreement was signed on Tuesday by Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov during the NATO summit in The Hague.
The collaboration aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, with Denmark allocating 500 million kroner to facilitate the establishment of a Ukrainian defense industry within its borders. While the specific location and products to be manufactured remain undisclosed, the initiative underscores Denmark’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen for Denmark’s significant defense and political support, highlighting the importance of their continued partnership. Zelenskyy emphasized that this agreement offers a mutually beneficial partnership for countries sincerely supporting Ukraine.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed Denmark’s dedication to utilizing its upcoming EU presidency to advance Ukraine’s integration with the EU and to implement sanctions that weaken Russia. She also mentioned the importance of joint defense production.
The Danish Defense Minister highlighted the mutual benefits of the agreement, stating that it will provide the Danish defense industry with access to cutting-edge technologies and expertise from Ukraine, particularly in areas such as drones and missiles. He also downplayed concerns that the agreement would elevate the risk of Russian sabotage or hybrid attacks against Denmark.
