More than 600 Danish filmmakers have signed an open letter urging the Danish government to immediately cease all arms exports, transport, and production to Israel. The letter, published in Politiken, accuses the government of directly and indirectly supporting Israel through these activities, claiming they contribute to war crimes and violations of international law.
The filmmakers addressed their plea directly to key government figures, including the Prime Minister and several ministers. They express disillusionment, stating that they believed Denmark prioritized respect for human life and adhered to principles of not harming children or depriving people of basic necessities.
The letter outlines four specific demands for the Danish government: First, a complete halt to all Danish arms exports, transport, and production to Israel, including the F-35 cooperation. Second, official recognition of Palestine as an independent state. Third, acceptance of wounded Palestinians from Gaza for medical treatment in Denmark. Finally, active efforts to repeal the EU’s association agreement with Israel until war crimes cease, humanitarian aid access is guaranteed, and press freedom is ensured in Palestine.
Signatories to the letter include prominent figures in the Danish film industry, such as director and screenwriter Anders Morgenthaler, actress Olivia Joof Lewerissa, and film director Jonas Risvig, as well as musician and actress Emma Sehested Høegh. The filmmakers assert that they will continue to advocate for these actions until the government demonstrates tangible commitment.
This is not the first time Emma Sehested Høegh has publicly supported such a message. She previously participated in an Oxfam Denmark campaign video in May, which similarly called on the government to halt all arms trade with Israel.
