Parliament to Discuss Mike Fonseca Case at Committee and Presidium Meetings

The Danish Parliament’s Committee on Rules of Procedure and the Presidium will convene on Thursday to discuss the Mike Fonseca case. Speaker of the Parliament, Søren Gade, announced the meetings in a letter to the committee on Wednesday.

The Committee on Rules of Procedure meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM, with the Presidium convening immediately afterward.

The meetings were prompted by recent revelations in a book detailing an alleged offer made by the Moderates party and chairman Lars Løkke Rasmussen to former member Mike Fonseca in 2023. The offer reportedly included 370,000 kroner as part of a severance agreement to encourage Fonseca to resign from Parliament.

Eight parties outside the government subsequently sent a letter to the Parliament’s leadership, requesting an investigation into several aspects of the case.

The parties sought an explanation from the Moderates regarding the source of the funds and requested an inquiry into whether paying someone to resign their mandate constitutes a violation of the law or the spirit of the constitution.

The Moderates party has been given the opportunity to submit written comments on the inquiry but has declined to comment.

The Parliament’s Administration has assessed the situation and stated that the case, as disclosed, does not appear to raise concerns regarding section 56 of the constitution. This section of the constitution states that members of parliament are only bound by their conviction and are not obliged to consider the opinions of their party or voters.
