Denmark Plans to Significantly Increase Military Presence in Greenland

Denmark is set to significantly increase its military presence in Greenland, with the government planning to allocate a substantial double-digit billion amount to bolster the defense of its northernmost territory. Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen announced the initiative, emphasizing the need for a more permanent Danish defense presence in Greenland.

The decision follows concerns raised by the United States regarding Denmark’s ability to adequately defend Greenland. The increased military presence aims to demonstrate Denmark’s commitment to prioritizing its military presence in cooperation with Greenland.

Negotiations for an Arctic Package 2 will commence upon the Minister of Defence’s return from the NATO summit in The Hague. This package will build upon the previous Arctic Package 1, which included investments in new Arctic patrol vessels and long-range drones. The new investments will focus on rotating Danish soldiers, including special operations forces, for exercises in Greenland.

While Denmark and the USA have shared responsibility for defending Greenland since 1951, the increased Danish presence is not intended to replace American involvement. It is a move to strengthen Denmark’s own capabilities and signal its commitment to the region.

The Danish military has recently conducted a large-scale exercise in Greenland, involving all three services, including F-16 aircraft refueled by French aircraft. This exercise provided valuable experience for Danish soldiers in operating within a significant part of the Kingdom.
