Lars Bluhme, a 70-year-old former principal and city council politician, has dramatically improved his health and quality of life in the past year through significant lifestyle changes. His transformation, spurred by a fear of declining health and early death like his father, serves as an inspiration to older adults to take control of their well-being.
Bluhme’s journey began on his 70th birthday when he felt despondent about his health and future. He feared a decline similar to his father’s, who suffered from weight issues and died prematurely. This realization motivated him to take action and overhaul his lifestyle.
In just one year, Bluhme lost nearly 18 kilograms, reducing his weight from 97.8 kg to 79.9 kg. His body fat percentage decreased from 30% to 15%, and his waist size shrank by 21 centimeters, going from 109 cm to 88 cm. Furthermore, he has been able to reduce his dependence on medication for high cholesterol and has lowered his resting heart rate to 55 beats per minute.
Bluhme’s transformation includes regular physical activity and dietary changes. He attends the fitness center three times a week for circuit training, focusing on strength training to maintain muscle mass. On other days, he incorporates plank exercises and a 12-minute strength training routine at home. His diet now includes daily intermittent fasting, primarily vegetarian meals, and vegetable smoothies.
Research supports the notion that it is never too late to improve one’s health. A study of individuals aged 70 to 89 found that physically active people had a significantly lower risk of death compared to their inactive counterparts. Experts suggest that people in their 60s can achieve similar strength and conditioning gains as they could in their 20s and that starting physical activity in your 60s gives you a three to four times greater chance of healthy aging.
Bluhme encourages others to take charge of their health regardless of age. He emphasizes that it is possible to make positive changes and experience the benefits of a healthier lifestyle, leading to a more fulfilling life in the later years. He recalls being able to actively participate with his grandchildren, something he might have missed out on had he not made these changes.
