A 70-year-old man, shot by police near Sorø town hall two weeks ago, will appear in court Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Court in Næstved. South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police confirmed his recovery allowed him to attend the preliminary hearing.
The man was initially presented in absentia on May 15 due to hospitalization for injuries sustained during the shooting. The indictment against him alleges he set fire to 12 gas cylinders at the entrance of a dental clinic in Sorø and threw two Molotov cocktails at the town hall entrance.
Furthermore, the indictment states he pursued two officers on his moped, threatening them with a pistol-like object, before being shot in the leg. The charge related to the Molotov cocktails is brought under section 180(3) of the Penal Code, reserved for cases with “particularly aggravating circumstances”.
At the previous preliminary hearing, the 70-year-old’s lawyer stated his client pleaded not guilty to all charges. The judge had previously ordered the man to be remanded in custody in absentia. Legal procedure dictates that an in absentia prisoner must appear in court within 24 hours of being deemed fit.
The police have characterized the incident as “isolated,” with no other injuries reported. The Independent Police Complaints Authority is currently investigating the police shooting and will submit a statement to the State Prosecutor in Copenhagen upon completion of their investigation.
